Horror, thrillers or family films: what to watch to scare yourself on Halloween?

Series or films, for adults or for children, here is a selection of ten programs recently unveiled by Netflix, Prime Video or Disney+ to thrill their subscribers.

Halloween weekend has arrived. While the kids get ready for the candy hunt and the revelers add the finishing touches to their costumes, moviegoers can heat up their remotes. Because in the age of platforms, the offer of (more or less) frightening programs is more abundant than ever.

Fans of fantasy or thrillers, but also families looking for programs to watch together: here is a selection of ten films and series recently unveiled by the streaming giants, to shiver as the witches’ sabbath approaches.

For fantasy lovers

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities

Ghostly apparitions in the middle of the night, an abandoned house haunted by a witch or a satanic cult discovered by chance: for his first series, Guillermo Del Toro offers eight independent horror stories. He signs or co-signs all the scripts, and the production of each episode has been entrusted to a different filmmaker.

The trailer promises its share of nightmarish visions, worthy of the Oscar-winning director’s filmography for The Shape of Water. On the casting side, viewers will no doubt recognize Rupert Grint, the interpreter of Ron Weasley in the saga Harry Potterwhich carries one of the episodes.

The Midnight Club

What happens after death? A group of teenagers, hospitalized in an establishment reserved for the terminally ill, decide to answer the greatest mystery of humanity. For this, they sign a pact: the first of them who breathes their last will have to communicate with the others from the grave. While waiting for the fateful hour, they meet every evening at midnight to tell strange stories about the previous residents…

The Midnight Club is the latest production from Mike Flanagan, Netflix’s favorite director, who unveils a new horror series (almost) every year on the platform as Halloween approaches. Since 2018, we owe him The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and midnight sermons.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism

The title leaves little room for doubt as to the content of the plot. Abby and Gretchen, two inseparable high school girls from the late 1980s, prepare for the latter’s move. But when she starts acting weird following a strange evening in the woods, Abby begins to suspect a case of demonic possession. She then sets out to free her, accompanied by a wacky sports coach. A feature film by Damon Thomas, halfway between the teenage boy and the horror film.

For lovers of thrillers

Barbaric

It all starts with a computer bug: Tess and Keith, two strangers, discover that they have booked the same house at the same time and decide to share accommodation. The disappointment turns to horror the night when Tess, awakened by strange noises, ventures into the cellar from where calls for help come to her…

Hailed by critics on the other side of the Atlantic, Barbaric established itself as the surprise success of the month of September, with 42 million dollars collected in American theaters for a budget of 4 million. This is Zach Cregger’s first production, carried by Bill Skarsgård (the clown of That) in the skin of the disturbing Keith.

Run Sweetheart Run

When Cherie agrees to let her boss play matchmaker, she thinks she’s done well. From the first minutes of her evening with the handsome Ethan, she falls in love and agrees to follow him home for a last drink. Only then does he reveal his true nature. Frightened, she manages to flee but the nightmare is just beginning: Cherie will have to survive a bloody chase through the night, during which she discovers the secrets of her stalker.

This horror film with feminist overtones produced by Blumhouse (Paranormal Activity, American Nightmare) was originally supposed to hit theaters, but the pandemic dictated otherwise. Two years after its preview at the Sundance festival, this realization of Shana Feste arrives in streaming just in time for Halloween.

The Watcher

The Brannock family invests all their savings to acquire the house of their dreams, a sumptuous villa in the suburbs of New York. Very quickly, they discover a most hostile neighborhood, hear suspicious noises, and receive strange letters from a crow, the mysterious “watchman”, who announces to them that he is watching the house in an ever more threatening tone. .

The Watcher is the latest series from the prolific Ryan Murphy (Glee, Nip/Tuck, American Horror Story, Dahmer). It features Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale and Mia Farrow. It is adapted from a real news story, revealed in 2018 by the New YorkMagazine.

American Horror Story: NYC

Speaking of Ryan Murphy, his newest baby just arrived. The eleventh season ofAmerican Horror Story, like its predecessors, tells an independent and complete story. This time, the plot takes place in the New York gay night of the 1980s. The community is shaken by a series of bloody murders. Detective Patrick Read, a repressed homosexual, leads the investigation backwards… This 10-episode thriller, against a backdrop of the AIDS epidemic, began its broadcast last week in the United States. All episodes will be available on Canal+ 24 hours after their broadcast across the Atlantic.

Hocus Pocus 2

Almost 30 years later Hocus Pocus, Disney + has just resurrected the three witches of this Halloween film par excellence. Actresses Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy return as the three fearsome magicians in this highly anticipated sequel.

As in the first part, a spell brings the Sanderson sisters back to life. They always have only one objective: to suck the life of children to remain eternally young. This family comedy drops the chills to favor humor, all sprinkled with the supernatural.

The Evil Spirit of Halloween

On Halloween Day, Sydney (Priah Ferguson, Stranger Things) inadvertently awakens an evil spirit by lighting a lantern found in his attic. One after another, all the disturbing decorations installed by the neighbors come to life, sowing chaos. Accompanied by her father (Marlon Wayans, Requiem for a Dream), she has until midnight to send the evil ghost back where it came from.

Wendell & Wild

Kat Elliot, a difficult teenager, signs a deal with two goofy demons: if she helps them invade the world of the living, they will bring her parents back to life. Then begins a strange and comical adventure, against a backdrop of disturbing graphics.

Wendell & Wild is signed by the director Henry Selick, at the origin of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline. He again uses the stop-motion technique to bring his characters to life. And as for these two previous examples, Wendell & Wild is not intended for the youngest children, nor for the most impressionable.
