The Jurassic Park + Jurassic World trilogy
Well yes, of course. As you can imagine, nothing new on the horizon for the films in question here, but we are still talking about a franchise that has left its mark on cinema and it was necessary to talk about it here. January 1st on Prime Video, so you can start the year with the three Jurassic Parks (the first two of which were made by Steven Spielberg himself) and the first Jurassic World. If you like dinosaurs or have a strong urge to dive back into the 90s, then you know where to go (and if you want to rejuvenate your culture, it’s ideal too).
- Released on Prime Video: January 1, 2023
- Directors : Steven Spielberg, Joe Jonstone, Colin Trevorrow
- With : Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard
Amazon is putting Stanley Kubrick in the spotlight at the very beginning of the year and will offer two feature films by the eminent director: Eyes Wide Shut and Full Metal Jacket. The first was released in 1999 and explored the theme of adultery with two leading actorsnamely Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidmane; the second dates from 1987 and is an absolutely cult war film with Matthew Modine, Arliss Howard or Vincent D’Onofrio, lost in the Vietnam War. And then, we must admit that Stanley Kubrick is a filmmaker with a unique touch whose filmography, legendary in many respects, deserves your full attention. And even a second time, if you have already seen the two works in question.
- Released on Prime Video: January 1, 2023
- Director :Stanley Kubrick
- With : Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin
DC Comics may be a pop-culture titan, but its attempt to make a Marvel-like extended universe was a half-acknowledged failure for years (and recently confirmed, since the whole thing will soon be shrunken to make room for a whole new construction site). Among the few successful, or at least nice, iterations, we can mention Shazam: the story is that of a young boy who acquires divine power, transforming himself into an adult endowed with extraordinary abilities. So no, we’re not on a phenomenal banger, but the whole thing radiates an appreciable good-natured mood and a certain lightness. It’s really far from perfect, but you have to take Shazam like a popcorn movie, to work on just as quickly. Sometimes it feels good.
- Released on Prime Video: January 2, 2023
- Director : David F. Sandberg
- With : Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Mark Strong, Djimon Hounsou
The Rig, Season 1 (Prime Video Original Series)
Amazon will deliver on January 6 a brand new series produced by it exclusively on its catalog: The Rig. The storyline follows the strange misadventures of a crew working on Kishorn Bravo, a large oil station in the waters of the North Sea. The problem is a gigantic (supernatural?) fog envelops the platform and its workers, scrambling all communications and sowing madness among the poor unfortunates, trying to understand the why and how. A series with an enigmatic story and a mysterious atmosphere, very possibly tinged with the paranormal that we will have to watch very closely. The trailer below speaks for itself.
- Released on Prime Video: January 6, 2023
- Creator: David MacPherson
- With : Iain Glen, Emily Hampshire, Martin Compston
Hunters, Season 2 (Prime Video Original Series)
To pay Al Palcino as a figurehead and especially in a television series, it is not easy and yet this is what Hunters has done brilliantly: this frankly recent project (Season 1 dates from 2020) has reaped a certain success, enough to produce a second season which will therefore arrive at the very beginning of the year 2023. Hunters tells the story of a group of Americans, the “Hunters”, who track down the Nazis hidden in the United States. Obviously, these vigilantes act in violence and therefore in illegality, which will earn them to be prosecuted by the police for a great manhunt. In a very funky tone – the context is planted in 1977 – this series therefore explores the themes of revenge, legality and legitimacy. It must be admitted that it is consumed very, very well and that this new season is therefore eagerly awaited by viewers who appreciated the previous one. And if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s happening on Prime Video.
- Released on Prime Video: January 13, 2023
- Creator: David Weil (II)
- With : Al Pacino, Logan Lerman, Jerrika Hinton
Grindhouse Collection (Death Boulevard + Planet Terror)
Quentin Tarantino’s films are precious and therefore deserve special attention. Boulevard de la Mort, released in 2007, is all the more unique in its tone and very concept: it is accompanied by another film, Planet Terror, directed by Robert Rodirguez. The two thus form the diptych “Grindhouse” officiating in the horror thriller, also paying homage to the chase films of the 70s! Boulevard de la Mort tells the story of a serial killer played by Kurt Russel, with one particularity, however: he only kills with his fearsome car. Planet Terror tells the fate of a group of soldiers, doctors and a go-go dancer in the midst of a dark history of the living dead. Very particular feature films, violent and atypical by their graphic atmosphere, their inimitable dialogues and their delicious parodic side.
- Released on Prime Video: January 15, 2023
- Director :Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez
- With : Kurt Russell, Zoë Bell, Rose McGowan, Freddy Rodriguez, Josh Brolin
Making a sequel to the mythical Blade Runner was not easy and to do this, it was the very talented Denis Villeneuve who was chosen for this sequel entitled Bladerunner 2049, released in 2017. We thus find this ultra-futuristic cyberpunk universe and frankly dark, but also so catchy: for once, the context takes place thirty years after the events of the first film and focuses on the investigation of a blade runner played by Ryan Gosling, a policeman responsible for tracking down replicants (androids who blend into society) . He will have to cross paths with the mythical Rick Deckard while being chased by a mysterious villain (Jared Leto): if the film can surprise by its sometimes very (too much, some would say) slow pace, it is nonetheless a rather impressive atmospheric atmosphere of which only Villeneuse, a true lover of imagery and sound, has the secret.
- Released on Prime Video: January 18, 2023 2022
- Director : Denis Villeneuve
- With : Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Jared Leto
The Legend of Vox Machina Season 2 (Prime Video Original Series)
The Dungeons & Dragons franchise is now part of the furniture, but still has some really interesting projects to offer, such as The Legend of Vox Machina: this animated series, the first season of which was released in 2020, has been a great success with from the public, coming from the crowdfunding campaign of a web-series called Critical Role. In a heroic fantasy world, a troop of adventurers with very specific skills and sassy personalities go on a mission… to repay their debts, before being hired to defeat an evil entity. An adventure full of humour, adventure and violence which make it a cartoon very clearly made for adults and whose sequel will therefore be available on January 20th. A good snack.
- Released on Prime Video: January 20, 2023
- Creation: Critical Role
- With : Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey
Shotgun Wedding (Prime Video Original Movie)
During their wedding on a paradise island, Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel have everything to be happy… until the arrival of the former of this first, played by Lenny Kravitz, then downright that of a team of armed pirates to the teeth that will take everyone hostage. In this action comedy for all audiences, two mega-stars from Hollywood (and not only) give the reply in a light tone, humor and fights in support, and the cocktail promises to be rather effective. So yes, we are clearly on a Sunday night movie with a good pizza and not a lot of demands, but who knows: it could be a good surprise.
- Released on Prime Video: January 27, 2023
- Director: Jason Moore
- With : Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel, Lenny Kravitz
