Wednesday gets a second season on Netflix

“It has been incredible to create a series that has connected with people all over the world,” said the co-showrunners and creators of the series Alfred Gough And Miles Millar in a release on the second season. “We are thrilled to continue Wednesday’s torturous journey into season two. We can’t wait to dive headfirst into another season and explore the haunting world of Nevermore. We just need to make sure Wednesday didn’t empty the pool first.”

Wednesday is a live-action supernatural mystery series directed by Tim Burton that follows the eponymous Wednesday through her years as a student at the Nevermore Academy. Consisting of 8 episodes, the series sees protagonist Addams as she tries to master her emerging psychic ability, stop a monstrous killing spree terrorizing the local town of Jericho, and solve a 25-year-old mystery.

Wednesday premiered on Netflix in November to generally positive reviews, with most fans and critics praising Ortega’s performance. The series marked the second-biggest premiere in Netflix history, with more than 6 billion minutes viewed in its first week on the platform, second to Stranger Things season 4, which got 7.2 billion minutes in the same time period. Similarly, Wednesday recently broke a Nielsen streaming record for the second time, gaining more than 5 billion viewed minutes in its second week of availability.

Ahead of the show’s official renewal, it was reported that the announcement of a second season would arrive in early 2023. Gough and Millar also teased potential storylines should the second season be greenlit by Netflix. “The series is about a girl who sees the world in black and white and discovers that there are shades of gray,” Gough said. “I think like any relationship or friendship, it can be complicated by other factors. It will never be smooth as oil. And it is she who learns to manage the ups and downs of friendship”.

Wednesday Season 1 is now available to stream on Netflix. The second season does not yet have a release date.
