Netflix’s selection of fantasy movies is not a set that is defined by clear and fixed margins. In fact, it is the most varied: fantasy and magic are often linked to terror, comedy… There is nothing closed when it comes to cinematographic narrative.
The common thread between all of them is the imagination in their plot, unaware of limits, an exploration of the impossible that helps -and a lot- to shed some light on the day to day and leave behind the problems we have to deal with. . The abundant catalog of the streaming giant has many proposals for series with magic and fantasy: there is the case of ‘The Witcher’, the series that was going to carry the Netflix banner in the genre (and it is that you have to stand up to HBO’s immeasurable ‘Game of Thrones’). In any case, although the series are a great proposal to watch as a family, it is quite difficult to have time to gather everyone in front of the screen. And that there are fantasy series without a doubt. Therefore, what better than a movie with a lot of magic as a joint activity because it will not require many hours.
You have titles like ‘The Old Guard’, Netflix’s own production, in which actress Charlize Theron is the leader of a group of soldiers with somewhat supernatural abilities. Or there are emblematic adventure films of the last decade, such as ‘How to train your dragon’, the beginning of a great saga, as well as ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’, the film with which a great journey of hand of Bilbo Baggins and we were once again traveling through Middle-earth.
Get ready to, either alone or with your family, let yourself be carried away by a story for a while. No other genre helps us escape more. Who better than Charlize Theron to lead such a special and select body? The actress is the leader of some immortal mercenaries. The particular battalion is going to have to face a great threat: its great secret is in danger and someone seems to want to benefit from its powers at all costs… Fantasy served at the stroke of action.
The Dark Tower (Nikolaj Arcel)
‘The Dark Tower’ is an adaptation of the literary saga written by Stephen King, which will take us to a post-apocalyptic world where the gunslinger Roland Deschain (Idris Elba) pursues the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), determined to sow chaos . A work with a mix of genres made with agility and with the intention of mere entertainment.
Where is my body? (Jeremy Clapin)
Considered by critics as one of the best animated films of recent years, this story tells of a hand that escapes from a laboratory with the intention of returning to the body from which it has been amputated. A combination of genres that combined offer a great story (although not for the little ones).
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Peter Jackson)
After his successful trilogy, there was an urge to explore Bilbo’s life. So ten years ago the first chapter of the prequel was released. In the company of Gandalf and thirteen dwarves, the hobbit Bilbo Baggins undertakes a journey through the country of the elves and the forests of the trolls to the Lonely Mountain, where the dragon Smaug hides the treasure of the Dwarves.
How to Train Your Dragon (Dean DeBlois, Chris Sanders)
In 2010 we met Toothless, Hiccup and then came the sequels in which we saw him grow up. In 2014 and 2019 the continuations arrived. As the review for FOTOGRAMAS said, the directors “add teenage vitamin to the imaginary universe of British writer Cressida Cowell, forge an irresistible bestiary and finish off the remarkable adventure with an unusual note.”
4 years ago, Will Smith and Joel Edgerton premiered on Netflix a story directed by David Ayer that was as if they had added a good dose of fantasy to ‘Bad Boys’, with orcs and fairies involved. A film very much in the style of Will Smith (from that good guy who sold us before the last Oscar gala), with magic and action shootings hand in hand.
Of Love and Monsters (Michael Matthews)
The land is plagued by monsters and the survivors live underground. There is no choice but to survive in the new conditions and, if it is time to reunite with his love, then he will have to learn to deal with the creatures. It has references to many previous works, but this film has its own personality and offers entertainment and action set in a post-apocalyptic world with a high dose of fantasy.
I kill giants (Anders Walter)
Barbara is bullied in the morning, at night she kills giants. Walter’s directorial debut brings a moving and magical story, with Zoe Saldana and Imogen Poots in the cast.
The Spiderwick Chronicles (Mark Waters)
A family moves from the big city to a large mansion, in which things happen that are not very normal to say. The scheme has been used several times, but the formula does not seem to be exhausted. Freddie Highmore starred in this enjoyable film for the whole family.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola)
A contemporary horror classic, a love story and a story about the most famous vampire in literature. Coppola left thirty years ago, another story of his filmography that today is considered a cult.
Warcraft: The Origin (Duncan Jones)
What better place to be nurtured by fantasy in all its splendor than in a story from a video game? The kingdom of Azeroth is about to go to war with terrible invaders: warrior orcs who have left their destroyed world to colonize another. As a portal opens connecting the two worlds, one army faces destruction, the other extinction. Two heroes, one on each side, are about to collide in a confrontation that will change the destiny of their family, their town and their home.
One of the most mythical films of the 90s, with two of the most relevant performers of those years: Robin Williams and Kristen Dunst. Both got into an adventure that began with a board game called Jumanji. Its two successors released in this decade are also available on Netflix.
Snow White and the Huntsman (Rupert Sanders)
The story of Snow White is a fireproof story. In this version, the bad fell on Charlize Theron, magnificent as the Queen wanting to finish off a young and brave Kristen Stewart. As secondary, Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin completed the cast of this medieval fantasy story.
Errementari (Paul Urkijo Alijo)
Another Spanish film of the genre that you can find on the platform. In a town in Álva, in the middle of the 19th century, a government commissioner investigates an event that leads him to a gloomy blacksmith shop deep in the woods, where a dangerous and lonely blacksmith named Patxi lives. Villagers in the area tell dark stories about him involving robbery, murder, and demonic pacts. Until by chance an orphan girl named Usue manages to sneak into the mysterious blacksmith shop, uncovering the terrible truth that the mysterious Patxi is hiding.
A monster comes to see me (Juan Antonio Bayona)
Juan Antonio Bayona brought a hard coming of age seasoned with fantastic components. Bullying, self-improvement and, above all, the mother-son relationship came together in a melodrama that was a complete success at the Spanish box office.
