Barrera is a consistent trend on IMDbPro’s STARmeter chart, fueled by her recent role as a plane crash survivor in the Netflix miniseries Keep Breathing. Earlier this year, Barrera’s STARmeter skyrocketed playing Sam Carpenter in Scream, which topped the IMDbPro MOVIEmeter chart. Fans are looking forward to his upcoming performances in Carmen and Scream 6.

“Thank you so much for this award. I feel incredibly honored,” said Barrera, celebrating her recognition while attending the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). “Receiving this award during Hispanic Heritage Month means the world to me, proving that representation matters and is necessary. I remember when I started acting in Mexico, I still didn’t have a page on IMDb and Mexican soap operas hadn’t opened up. step on my credits. After my first movie, someone mentioned IMDb to me and I saw that a page had been created for me. It was a milestone to get that first credit, and every aspiring actor wants it one day. I can’t thank you enough IMDb and IMDbPro for making my work and the work of so many other communities available. It truly is the best resource for getting discovered.”

“Melissa Barrera made a splash on the IMDb STARmeter chart last summer, literally dancing in our living rooms, and in our hearts, with In the Heights,” said Col Needham, IMDb Founder and CEO. “We are very proud to recognize her as our latest recipient of an IMDb STARmeter Award and are thrilled to celebrate her incredible performances, which fans and entertainment professionals alike have flocked to IMDb and IMDbPro to learn more about her and her work.”

Barrera has a host of upcoming projects, including Bed Rest, Scream 6 and Carmen, which recently premiered at TIFF. Barrera noted that the films “are incredibly different, and that in itself is exciting for me. Carmen is art, and I’m excited for people to see me in a more Spanish-speaking role. Bed Rest is supernatural horror, but so emotional that I think which is going to move people a lot. And finally Scream 6-the fandom is not ready. This movie is going to blow their minds!”

Recalling one of her first IMDb credits, playing “Mariana Durán” in the 2012 telenovela La Otra Cara del Alma, Barrera described the role as a big step in her career as it offered “a real character arc, allowing the audience to appreciate Mariana and all these iconic moments. We shot a Quinceanera party in the main square of the magical city of Taxco, Mexico, and it had a similar plot to Gilmore Girls. I learned a lot about acting through these such dense and dramatic scenes.”

Barrera also shared some of the actors and filmmakers who have inspired her career, such as Salma Hayek, Guillermo del Toro, Rita Moreno, and Alfonso Cuarón. IMDb users can add the television series and movies from Barrera’s IMDb filmography, as well as other titles, to their IMDb watchlist at

About Carmen

Benjamin Millepied’s CARMEN is a gritty modern tale, with a majestic score by Nicholas Britell, and dreamlike dance sequences that evoke magical realism. The story follows a young and very independent woman who is forced to flee her home in the Mexican desert after the brutal murder of her mother, another strong and mysterious woman. Carmen (MELISSA BARRERA) survives a terrifying and dangerous illegal border crossing into the United States, only to be confronted by a lawless volunteer border guard who cold-bloodedly murders two other immigrants from her group. When the border guard and his fellow patrolman, Aidan (PAUL MESCAL) – a Marine with PTSD – are drawn into a deadly confrontation, Carmen and Aidan are forced to flee together. They head north to Los Angeles in search of Carmen’s mother’s best friend, the fickle Masilda (ROSSY DE PALMA) and owner of La Sombra nightclub, a music and dance sanctuary. Carmen and Aidan find solace and their unwavering love in the safety of Masilda’s magical haven, but time is running out as the police hunt draws closer. Sony Pictures Classics will release CARMEN in early 2023.
