Synopsis

Prohibited for children under 12

Rome, 1943, under Nazi occupation, the Eternal City welcomes the circus where Matilde, Cencio, Fulvio and Mario work like fairground freaks. Israel, the owner of the circus and father figure of this small family, tries to organize their escape to America, but he disappears. Deprived of a home and protection, in a society where they no longer have a place, the four “Freaks” will try to survive in a world at war…

With numbers where the fantastic gently illuminates the daily life of the Italian public, “Freaks Out” opens with the most beautiful naive magic of a representation of an ephemeral circus. In turn, the abilities of each of the members of the small troop that composes it are revealed to us, skilfully presented to awaken the same child’s soul that shines through the wonder of its spectators. And then the chaos…

A very good original film mixing different genres (drama, horror, war, fantasy,..) The main and secondary characters are all colorful and well developed. The heroine is fantastic. The film is very good despite its length. An excellent film to discover especially at the cinema for the sound and image work.

Monstrous! I haven’t seen Gabriele Mainetti’s first film, We Call Him Jeeg Robot, which was already in the fantastic and the supernatural. But the 141 minutes – which we don’t see pass, as the film is so dense – of adventures between drama and fantasy are quite formidable. Rome, 1943, under Nazi occupation, the Eternal City welcomes the circus where Matilde, Cencio, Fulvio and Mario work as phenomena of …

Unknown Gabriele Mainetti may be a genius director of a cinema in the flavor of Del Toro, Tarantino, Fellini, Sergio Leone. His first real feature film is for me complicated to summarize and impossible to spoil because the surprises are so big and rich in effects, with a lot of reference to great action films, fantastic or even historical adventures (even the choice of music is Great). A movie …

Shooting Secrets

Statement of intent

Gabriele Mainetti approached Freaks Out as a challenge: “to tell an adventure, a coming-of-age story, while reflecting on diversity, against the backdrop of one of the darkest periods of the 20th century. We approached the occupied Rome of 1943 with emotion and respect, but also with unlimited fantasy. »

Genesis

After the superheroes in They Call Me Jeeg Robot, director Gabriele Mainetti and screenwriter Nicola Guaglianone have decided to tackle monsters. It was the latter who had the idea for this subject, passionate about this theme which he had already been able to explore in another film, Indivisibili, on Siamese twins. Mainetti, for his part, was more reserved: “I was rather skeptical. I had not yet imagined at this moment

Understand the villains

The director wants to give a real thickness to the villains in his films: “The villains that I find the most frightening in the history of cinema are those who hide a flaw, a suffering […]. This is why, when approaching the character of Franz, we looked for the reasons why he let evil enter his life. I think emphasizing all the facets of the characters, even the most ina
