The Dark Tower: The first details of the TV series created by Mike Flanagan

Mike Flanagan, who recently went into business with Amazon Studios via his Intrepid Pictures after years of working with Netflix, has spoken of his new project as his “holy grail.” The writer seemed thrilled to finally be able to actually work on a series based on The Black Tower, which he had long hoped for. “Amazon doesn’t necessarily turn it into something concrete. But it’s something I’m working on myself so I’m really happy to finally be able to put something together,” he told Deadlines.

“For more than half of my life, I’ve closed my eyes and been able to picture this show, I’ve dreamed about it. I’ve had that image buzzing in my head since I was a college student. Sooner or later it’s got to come out from there. I really need to get that out of my head,” Flanagan added of writing the pilot episode as “one of my favorite things I’ve ever gotten to work on.” The screenwriter also revealed that he had contacted Stephen King himself (to whom he allegedly sent “a very detailed outline” of the project) and that he received his blessing.

An unfortunate project: From the 2017 film to the series never made by Prime Video

The saga of The Black Tower has already been adapted into a 2017 film with Idris Elba as the protagonist Roland Deschain, a gunslinger from a post-apocalyptic world who is in search of the titular tower, the hub of multiple realities. In the film version he was also involved Matthew McConaughey as Roland’s nemesis, the Man in Black, but the experiment proved to be a flop. So much so that Prime Video, which was already developing the pilot episode of a series based on the same work, gave up on it in 2020. Mike Flanagan, however, seems very optimistic and already has in mind “a series of five seasons followed by two independent features”. He is not frightened by the majesty of the work, on the contrary. “You have to be intimidated by it to get it right,” he concluded his interview. We just have to wait to find out if the ambitious project will materialize.
