Chucky and Annabelle might have to make room in the killer doll scene, because M3GAN might end up sticking around for a while. From writer Akela Cooper and director Gerard Johnstone, M3GAN is produced by genre veterans Jason Blum and James Wan. It tells the story of a robotic doll programmed with artificial intelligence who becomes a little too protective of the young girl she considers her best friend.

The film is nearing its release in early 2023, and ahead of its arrival, producers Blum and Wan talked about M3GAN in a new interview with.. For Blum, the producer was clearly thrilled with the release of M3GAN, going so far as to to dress up as a doll for Halloween in October. When asked if this was a sign that M3GAN could be the “start of another Insidious” for Blum, here’s what the filmmaker had to say.

” I hope. I mean, we don’t want to put the cart before the horse. But if a lot of people like the movie, I hope we can do more. »

But can a new killer doll movie hold its own in a world where the Chucky and Annabelle franchises have already dominated the scene? Perhaps, as M3GAN comes with a gimmick that makes it a bit more unique compared to its predecessors. Wan describes how the doll isn’t supernaturally powered, noting how the character’s AI aspect helps give the film a sense that something could potentially happen in the real world.

“We knew we wanted to make a killer doll movie that was different from all the other killer doll movies. First, M3GAN is not possessed by a supernatural entity or a supernatural serial killer. We wanted to look at something that was more real world; something that was more relevant to what’s happening today with all of this artificial intelligence technology seeping in and now coming to the surface every day in our world. »

When Gemma suddenly becomes the guardian of her 8-year-old orphan niece, Cady (McGraw), Gemma is insecure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to team up her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to solve both problems, a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.
