Padre Pio Living Eucharist

(Mons. Pasquale Maria Mainolfi-Theologian) Already 20 years have passed since the splendid day of the canonization of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, which took place in St. Peter’s Square on June 16, 2002 with the papal chapel presided over by St. John Paul II. That day I had the joy of being present in the group of officials of the Congregation of Saints. An irrepressible crowd filled St. Peter’s Square, Via della Conciliazione and even Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano, where large screens were placed for the occasion to encourage the participation of the faithful from all over the world. For the canonization of Blessed Pio of Pietrelcina, the Postulation presented to the competent Dicastery the healing of the little Matteo Pio Colella, 7 years old, of San Giovanni Rotondo, whose father, the surgeon Antonio Colella is well known in the Sannio area because he was originally from Pietradefusi. . The mother prof. Maria Lucia Ippolito, on the occasion of the feast of San Pio, testified in the Parish of San Gennaro in Benevento, declaring: “Matteo Pio was dead, then he saw Padre Pio”. We live in difficult times. We have built a humanism without Heaven. Now the true answer to our many problems are the Saints, true fountains of fresh and healthy water in the general desert of values. Providence guides history. Each age has its evils that afflict it, but also its Saints that save it. Now let’s do some theology of history. For the Christological and Trinitarian heresies of the first centuries, the Fathers of the Church; for the crisis of 1200, Francesco d’Assisi and Antonio di Padova; for the difficult 1500, with the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, apologists and founding saints of religious orders; for the century of Jansenism, the messages of the Heart of Jesus to Santa Margherita; for the Positivism of the 19th century, Lourdes and Bernadette; for the great war, Fatima and the three little shepherds; for modern times with the denial of God and the triumph of Freemasonry, Francesco Forgione (Pietrelcina 25 May 1887 – San Giovanni Rotondo 23 September 1968). Explosive testimony of the supernatural, new Moses in a world that has everything, even the superfluous, but lacks the necessary: Love! A life spent between “Oratio et Oblatio”, prayer and offering. Pius XII defines Padre Pio: “the salvation of Italy.” The historian Don Giuseppe De Luca: “Padre Pio, a living chalice for our thirst”. Chosen for a very great mission, says the journalist Antonio Socci, as John the Baptist the precursor of Christ and as the great prophet Elijah. His favorite spiritual daughter, Cleonice Morcaldi, considers him: “Another Jesus”. And the Salesian theologian, my very dear friend, Don Sabino Palumbieri, declares: “Padre Pio: the last supper rewritten in the twentieth century”. Our Padre Pio, in his existential parable, is: Priest, Altar and Victim. In the roaring years of armed conflicts and cold wars, in the years of suffering of immense masses of men, one of us, a son of the Samnite land, is chosen to live in his flesh the redemptive suffering of Christ in a singular way. Extraordinary man chosen by Providence, from among us, at the service of all of us, a successful man, a holy friar, life entirely given around a single axis: the Eucharist. Seraph of the Mass. The stigmatized, makes him the words of Unamuno: “The love of you burns us, white body. Love that is hungry. Bleeding Love. Our anxiety is satisfied only when we eat you, bread of immortality, divine flesh. Our ardent love, Love made flesh, Lamb of God, desires to eat you. It is not enjoying in you, it is making you ours, flesh of our flesh, and your pains to suffer in order to live a death that is life. And opening your arms in the gesture of giving yourself lovingly to us, you go repeating: Come, eat, take, this is My Body. Flesh of God, Word made flesh, satisfy our divine hunger with you ”. The whole life of Padre Pio takes place on the tensional axis of the Eucharist “source and summit” of his whole existence. His life: “A Mass on the world”. And even today “a worldwide clientele” follows him, seduced by his example, understood and interpreted by this luminous witness “Crucifix without the Cross,” a globalizing symbol of all human pain.
