Rimini, Shakespeare returns to the Galli Theater with ‘The Tempest’

A tribute to the almost supernatural strength and magic of the theatre, brought to the stage by one of the most popular signatures on the international contemporary scene. Alessandro Serra directs The Tempest by William Shakespeare, for the last appointment of 2022 with the prose program of the Galli Theater (Wednesday 21, Thursday 22 and Friday 23 December, at 21). Serra – who in addition to directing also takes care of the translation and adaptation of the text, sets, lights, sounds and costumes – then returns to face the Bard after the success of Macbettu, which led critics to define him as “a creator of worlds, an artist able to make empty space pulsate, to animate it, to make it come alive in front of the spectators”.

A critical and public acclaim that also accompanies this new work, which scores points in Rimini almost sold out already in presale: only very few seats available in the three evenings, as well as the special matinee for schools on Thursday morning.

“In The Tempest the supernatural bows down to the service of man,” he explains Greenhouse in director’s notes – Prospero is completely devoid of transcendenceyet with his crude magic he imprisons the spirits of nature, unleashes the storm, and raises the dead. But it will be Ariel, a spirit of the air, who will teach him the strength of compassion and forgiveness. On this stage-island everyone asks for forgiveness and everyone repents with the exception of Antonio and Sebastiano. The fact that Prospero gives up vengeance just when his enemies are lying at his feet, this is his true spiritual uplift, the supernatural comes when Prospero gives it up, gives up using it as a weapon. But the supreme power, Shakespeare seems to tell us, is the power of the Theater”.

The storm therefore “is a hymn to the theater made with the theatre whose magical strength lies precisely in this unique and unrepeatable possibility of accessing metaphysical dimensions through the scoundrels of a company of comedians who trample on four wooden planks, with a few objects and a pile of patched up costumes. Here lies its ancestral charm, namely in the fact that everything happens before our eyes, that everything is true despite being so blatantly simulated, but above all that superhuman strength manifests itself only on condition that there is an audience willing to listen and see , to imagine, to share the silence to create the ritual. Man will always have nostalgia for the theater because it has remained the only place where human beings can exercise their right to the magical act”.

The magic will be staged by Andrea Castellano, Vincenzo Del Prete, Massimiliano Donato, Salvo Drago, Jared McNeill, Chiara Michelini, Maria Irene Minelli, Valerio Pietrovita, Massimiliano Poli, Marco Sgrosso, Marcello Spinetta, Bruno Stori.

Director, author, set designer, light designer, Alessandro Serra founded the Compagnia Teatropersona in 1999, with which he stages his own works presented in many European countries, in Asia, South America, Russia, the United Kingdom. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the UBU award for best show and the Le Maschere del Teatro Italiano award for best set designer and best show for Macbettu. The Hystrio Award for directing and the Grand Prix “Golden Laurel Wreath Award” for best director (MESS Festival – Sarajevo).
