Beauty meets brutality of the ancient Norse world in The Northman, streaming soon.
If you want to see some brutal action with history and humanity behind it, watch The Northman and you will be amazed, bringing to mind the most classic dramas of literature and history: “I will avenge you, father… I will save you, mother… I will kill you, Fjolnir”. This mantra is repeated through gritted teeth by a muscular Norseman in one of the most impressive and engaging Viking movies ever made, The Northman.
Written and directed by Robert Eggers – director of The Witch and The Lighthouse – this brutal story of family honor and vengeance is a more direct retelling of the ancient Norse myth that inspired Shakespeare’s Hamlet. As soon as you find out where to watch The Northman, you will find yourself in a primitive world where almost animal brutality meets cunning and lust for revenge.
Family honour, hardship and raw humanity at its most primitive level, combined with brilliant cinematography and a masterful blend of gritty and supernatural realism, bring an ancient world to vivid life right on your TV screen.
Norse mythology takes center stage
Alexander Skarsgardborn in Stockholm and former member of the Swedish Armed Forces, of Zoolander and Generation Kill fame, takes on the role of Amleth, a pagan warrior prince who is sold into slavery after his father’s brutal murder. Amleth devotes the rest of his life to avenging his father’s death and freeing his captured mother.
Naturally, this requires him to maintain top-notch fitness and to show off his six pack abs throughout the film, which somehow remain attractive even when they are covered in blood, brains and mud.
Nicole Kidman plays the captured mother, the queen Gudrun, who Amleth believes endured great hardship in her role as a prisoner forced to marry the assassin Fjolnir, by whom she had a son, Gunnar. A young seer named Olga of the Birch Forest – played by Anya Taylor-Joy – reinforces Amleth’s belief that vengeance is the path to life and vows to use her powerful sorcery to aid him in his quest.
Things aren’t always what they seem, and Amleth soon learns that her childhood suggestions may not tell the full story of the events that have shaped her life and that they could also shape his death and his path to Valhalla.
