They save the world, thwart plots or kill bad guys, they change the course of history without ever coming to light… They have all the qualities, they know how to get out of the most desperate situations, and of course : they have an unequaled class. In the world of cinema, the spy is often this being supernatural to whom everything succeeded.
But spies aren’t just fictional characters: many wonderful films have been inspired by real life. During’Storyand even more so in times of war, spies were legion, and played essential roles. Mata Hari, Marlene Dietrich, Hedy Lamarr or even Edward Snowden have taken on this costume. Many filmmakers then wanted to adapt their lives, their exploits on the big screen, taking more or less freedom with the reality.
The spies in the cinema represent our vision of History, they intervene in conflicts that we dread, face dangers that we dare not imagine… Secret or world wars, technologies of the future, solitary hero or agency all-powerful, individual with multiple lives and identities: the spy allows us to represent all our fantasies.
The Cinémathèque therefore offers us an overview of the most outstanding spies in cinema, while presenting numerous video clips, posters, suits, of the gadgets and filming accessories, archives, works of art… History and fiction come together and mingle in this journey which makes us discover the most impressive figures of espionage. Fans of the genre are always in for a treat, with an impressive selection of works and films to see.
As always, the Paris cinema museum takes us on an exhibition fascinating, extremely well documented, and still as playful ! Cinema fans, don’t miss this great event, which should once again add to our list of films to see.
